The Best Rug Pads

A good rug can tie a room together, but a sliding, bunching rug can drive you absolutely crazy. I learned this the hard way with a runner in our main hallway. After nearly tripping for the tenth time, I finally invested in some decent rug gripper pads, and it made all the difference.

It’s not just about safety, either. A quality rug pad protects your floors from scratches and wear, especially with heavy furniture sitting on top. It also adds a little bit of cushion underfoot, which is always nice.

What I Look For in a Rug Pad

My main concern is always the floor type. A pad for hardwood is totally different from one you’d use on carpet. Natural rubber is great for wood because it grips without damaging the finish. Avoid cheap plastic or PVC pads, as I’ve seen them discolor wood floors over time.

Next, I think about cushion. Do I want the rug to feel softer and more luxurious, or do I just need it to stay put? For the living room, a little cushion is nice. For a hallway runner, I’d rather have a thinner, grippier pad that won’t raise the rug’s height too much.

Finally, always buy the pad that’s slightly larger than your rug. You can then trim it down so it’s about an inch shorter than the rug on all sides. This makes sure the pad is completely hidden and the edges of your rug can taper down to the floor naturally.
