Our central air is great, but it just can’t keep up in my upstairs office. Every summer, from July through August, that room turns into a sauna by 2 PM. I tried a window unit for a while, but I hated losing the view and the hassle of installing it every spring.

What To Look For When Buying

The most important thing is the BTU rating. Don’t just buy the biggest one; match it to your room size. A unit that’s too powerful for a small room will cycle on and off too quickly and won’t dehumidify properly. Most boxes have a handy square footage chart on them.

I also really prefer dual-hose units now. A single-hose unit will still cool a room, no doubt. But in my experience, a dual-hose model does it about 30% faster and more efficiently, which saves a little on the electric bill.

Finally, think about noise. None of these are silent—they all have a compressor and a fan. But some are definitely louder than others. If you’re a light sleeper and need one for your bedroom, look for models that specifically mention quiet operation or have a lower decibel (dB) rating.
