The signal is solid and I’ve never had it drop, even with the receiver being about 100 feet away inside the house. It updates quickly and the display is big enough to read from across the room. It just works, plain and simple.

The Downside: You do need batteries for both the floating part and the indoor receiver. I usually have to replace them once a season, which isn’t a big deal but something to remember.

It feels really well-built and sturdy. I gave this one to my brother whose house is brick, and he had trouble with other models’ signals getting through. This one has worked flawlessly for him.

The Downside: Like the Inkbird, it’s battery-operated. And a couple of times he mentioned the signal dropped for a minute, maybe from interference, but it always reconnected on its own.

 

 

Ambient Weather WS-14 Wireless Pool Thermometer

At about $61, this one’s a bit more of an investment, but for a good reason. The Ambient Weather WS-14 is for people who want to monitor more than one thing. You can have up to eight different sensors reporting back to one console display.

This is the one to get if you have a pool and a separate hot tub. Or maybe you want to monitor the temp in a pond or a stock tank. It’s incredibly accurate and the build quality feels top-notch, like it’s meant to last for years.

The Downside: The price is the main hurdle. If you only have a pool, you’re paying for features you won’t use. But if you’re a data nerd or have multiple bodies of water, it’s fantastic.

For about $51, the GoveeLife is the one for the smart home folks. Instead of a separate display, it sends the temperature right to an app on your phone. This means I can check the pool temp when I’m at the grocery store, which is pretty cool.

You can set alerts, so my phone will buzz when the pool finally hits 80 degrees in the spring. It also connects to Alexa, so I can just ask, “Alexa, what’s the pool temperature?” The accuracy has been spot-on and the battery seems to last forever.

The Downside: You have to set up the little WiFi gateway that comes with it. It’s not hard, but it’s an extra step and another thing to plug into an outlet inside your house.

If you don’t care about checking the temperature from inside, a simple floating digital thermometer is a great choice. And going solar means you never have to think about batteries.

This one from GAME is usually around $33. It’s the definition of simple and effective. You just toss it in the pool and the sun keeps it powered up. There are no batteries to change, ever.

The best part is the big, angled digital display. It’s so easy to read the temperature from the edge of the pool deck without having to pull it out of the water. It just floats around doing its job, and it’s surprisingly durable—the kids have bonked it with pool noodles plenty of times and it’s still ticking.

The Downside: There’s no remote monitoring at all. You have to physically be at the pool to see the temperature. For some people, that’s perfectly fine.

 

 

How to Pick the Right Pool Thermometer

Honestly, you can’t go wrong with any of these. The biggest question to ask yourself is: do you want to see the temperature from inside your house? If the answer is yes, grab one of the wireless models like the Inkbird or ThermoPro.

If you’re already invested in a smart home, the Govee is a no-brainer. The app and voice commands are genuinely useful. But if you just want a simple, bulletproof thermometer that you can read from the patio, the GAME solar model is fantastic and you’ll never buy batteries for it.
