The 7 Best LED Light Strips

I’ve been adding LED light strips around my house for years now. It started with putting a simple strip behind the TV in the living room, and now I’ve got them under the kitchen cabinets and even framing the headboard in our bedroom. What’s really cool is the RGBIC tech, which sounds complicated but just means it can show a bunch of different colors at the same time. It creates these neat flowing effects instead of just being one solid color. The strip itself feels well-made and the lights are plenty bright for adding some pop to the room.

The Downside: When I had to move it, the adhesive on the back was pretty strong. It left a little bit of sticky residue on the back of my TV that I had to clean off.

 

 

Philips Hue Lightstrip Plus

At around $80, the Philips Hue is a classic for a reason. If you’re already using other Philips Hue bulbs, adding this light strip is a no-brainer. It just works perfectly within that system.

The colors are super rich and accurate, and it gets really bright. I use one of these under the cabinets in my workshop, and it provides great task lighting. It connects to everything—Alexa, Google, even Siri—so it’s incredibly reliable once it’s set up.

The Downside: You really need the Philips Hue Hub to get all the features and make it work properly. If you don’t have one already, that’s an extra cost to consider.

 

 

Nanoleaf Essentials Matter Lightstrip

This Nanoleaf strip costs about $70. The big deal with this one is how ridiculously bright it is. At 2200 lumens, it can seriously light up a space, not just provide accent lighting. I tested this along the top of a bookshelf and it practically lit up the whole room.

It also supports Matter, which is the new smart home standard that helps devices from different brands talk to each other. That means it doesn’t matter if you have an Apple HomePod or a Google Nest Hub; it’ll connect without a headache. The colors look great, and the strip feels durable.

The Downside: I found the Nanoleaf app a little clunky to navigate compared to others. It works, but it’s not as straightforward as I’d like.

 

 

LIFX Lightstrip Color Zones

For about $84, the LIFX light strip is for people who want to get creative. It doesn’t need a hub, which is great—it connects directly to your Wi-Fi. The setup was pretty painless.

The best part is that it has eight different “zones” you can control on a single strip. This let me set up a cool gradient effect behind my desk, with one end blue and the other purple. It works with all the major voice assistants, too.

The Downside: Every once in a while, it seems to lose its Wi-Fi connection and I have to fiddle with it in the app to get it back online. It’s not frequent, but it’s annoying when it happens.

 

 

TP-Link Tapo Smart Wi-Fi Light Strip L930-5

This TP-Link Tapo strip is a great deal at $60. It’s another one that connects right to your Wi-Fi, so you don’t need any extra hardware. I’ve used TP-Link smart plugs for a while, and their app is one of the easiest to use.

The colors are bright and accurate, and it does all the basic smart stuff well. You can set schedules, use voice commands, and there’s even an “Away Mode” to make it look like someone’s home. For the price, it’s probably the most user-friendly smart strip I’ve tried.

The Downside: It doesn’t have as many fancy animations or multi-color effects as some of the more expensive options like the Govee M1 or LIFX.

 

 

Eve Light Strip

The Eve Light Strip is around $80, and this one is specifically for people who use Apple HomeKit. If your house runs on Siri and the Home app, this is probably the best strip you can get. It’s incredibly responsive and reliable.

It’s also super bright at 1800 lumens, bright enough to be the main light source in a small room. I love the Adaptive Lighting feature, which automatically changes the color temperature during the day to match natural sunlight. It’s a nice touch that makes a real difference.

The Downside: This is a big one—it only works with Apple HomeKit. If you use Alexa or Google Assistant, this strip is not for you.

 

 

Govee RGBIC Bluetooth LED Strip Lights

At $65, this is a fantastic budget option from Govee. This one doesn’t connect to Wi-Fi; it uses Bluetooth, so you control it from your phone when you’re nearby. I got one for my son’s room and he loves it.

It has a built-in microphone and can sync the lights to music, which is perfect for a party or just messing around. Like the other Govee, it has that RGBIC tech for multi-color effects, which is amazing to find at this price point.

The Downside: Because it’s Bluetooth only, there’s no smart home integration. You can’t control it with Alexa or Google, and you can’t turn it on when you’re away from home.

 

 

What To Look For In LED Strips

When I’m picking out new RGB LED strips, I usually think about three things first. How bright is it? The brightness, measured in lumens, tells you if it’s just for a soft glow or if it can actually light up an area for reading or cooking.

Second, how does it connect? Some need a separate hub, which can be a pain if you don’t already have one. Others connect directly to your Wi-Fi, which is simpler but can crowd your network if you have a lot of devices. And some are just Bluetooth, which is easy but less versatile.

And finally, what smart home system do you use? If you’re all-in on Alexa, Google, or Apple HomeKit, you’ll want a strip that plays nice with your setup. There’s nothing better than just using your voice to set the perfect lighting for any mood.
