I’ve swapped out more light fixtures than I can count. It’s one of the easiest ways to totally change the feel of a room without breaking out a paint roller. And pendant lights are my favorite—they can be a simple spotlight over a kitchen sink or a big statement piece in the dining room.

Hanging a new pendant light is a weekend project that pays off every single night. After trying dozens of different pendant lighting styles in our own home, from cheap-and-cheerful to investment pieces, I’ve figured out what works and what doesn’t. Some look great online but feel flimsy in person, while others are a nightmare to install.
