Let’s Make Your Guest Room a Holiday Haven

The holidays are almost here, which means you’re likely thinking about hosting friends and family. While the main living spaces get all the decorating attention, the guest bedroom often becomes an afterthought. I think that’s a missed opportunity!

Preparing the guest bedroom for the holidays isn’t about creating a magazine-perfect space. It’s about crafting a cozy, quiet retreat where your favorite people can unwind from the joyful chaos of it all. It’s a way to show them you’re truly happy they’re here.

 

 

Start with Comfort, Not Christmas

Before a single ornament comes out, let’s talk basics. Your guests’ comfort is the number one priority. Nothing says “welcome” like a truly comfortable bed.

I always start with fresh, clean linens. If you live somewhere chilly, consider flannel sheets in a simple plaid or solid color. Make sure you have a couple of pillow options—one firm, one soft—because everyone has a preference. And always, always have an extra blanket folded at the foot of the bed. A chunky knit or faux fur throw is perfect for the season.

 

 

Subtle and Smart Holiday Guest Bedroom Decor

You don’t need a full-sized Christmas tree in the corner to make the room feel festive. When it comes to guest room holiday decorating, a light touch goes a long way. The goal is festive and calm, not overwhelming.

 

 

Bring in Seasonal Textiles

This is my favorite trick. Swap out the standard decorative pillows for a couple with seasonal texture or color. Think velvet in a deep emerald green, a needlepoint pillow with a simple snowflake, or a cozy cable-knit cover in cream or burgundy.

You can also lay a festive-but-simple runner over the dresser or nightstand. A piece of tartan fabric or simple linen in a holiday color works beautifully.

 

 

Add a Touch of Nature

A little bit of greenery makes any space feel more alive. You don’t need a huge arrangement! A small stoneware vase with a few sprigs of eucalyptus and red winterberry on the nightstand is perfect. A mini Norfolk pine in a terracotta pot adds a lovely, subtle pine scent without being too much.

 

 

Incorporate Warm Lighting

Holiday magic is all about the glow. I love to place a small, battery-operated strand of warm white fairy lights inside a glass cloche or a large lantern. It creates a beautiful, soft light that’s much nicer than the overhead fixture. Even swapping the standard lamp bulb for one with a lower, warmer kelvin temperature makes a big difference.

 

 

Create a “Welcome Station”

This is a small touch that makes guests feel incredibly cared for. Find a small tray and place it on the dresser or a side table. It’s a simple way to gather a few thoughtful items in one spot.

On the tray, I like to include a small glass carafe with water, a couple of glasses, and a little dish with some nice chocolates. This is also the perfect place to put the Wi-Fi password in a small, simple frame. In my experience, it’s the first thing everyone asks for!

A universal charging cord or a multi-port USB hub is another great addition. Your guests will thank you when they don’t have to hunt for an open outlet behind the bed.

 

 

Think About the Practical Needs

A beautiful room is great, but a functional one is even better. Before guests arrive, spend five minutes thinking through their stay from their perspective. Where will they put their suitcase? Where will they hang their coat?

Make sure there’s an obvious spot for their luggage, like a folding luggage rack or a clear bench at the end of the bed. It’s so much better than them having to live out of a suitcase on the floor. Clear out a few drawers in the dresser and make sure there are at least 5-6 empty hangers in the closet—and not the wire ones from the dry cleaner!

I always lay out a fresh set of towels on the bed. A nice touch is including a dark-colored washcloth specifically for washing off makeup. It saves your nice white towels from stubborn mascara stains.

 

 

A Thoughtful Space is the Best Welcome

At the end of the day, preparing your guest bedroom for the holidays is an act of love. It’s not about spending a lot of money or getting every detail perfect for the 2026 season.

It’s about the feeling you create. A clean room, a comfortable bed, and a few thoughtful details are all you need to make your guests feel genuinely welcomed and right at home. That’s the best holiday gift you can give them.
